SS United States, currently docked at Pier 82 on the Delaware River in Philadelphia, is a retired luxury passenger liner that was launched in 1952. It was designed to capture the trans-Atlantic speed record and could be converted to a troop carrier should the need have arisen.
It still holds the
Blue Riband (fastest liner to cross the Atlantic Ocean Westbound with the record highest speed of 34.51 knots). It was withdrawn from service in 1969, and since then has changed ownership numerous times without becoming active. The
latest news is that it will be preserved as a part of a multi-purpose waterfront complex.
