Backlit Brooklyn Bridge / 1 WTC

Backlit Brooklyn Bridge - 1 WTC

Shooting directly into the sun usually produces a silhouette. On this day, I was fortunate because there was sufficient haze/fog to allow me to capture some detail, especially in the Downtown Manhattan buildings. Backlighting is a technique used generally in portraiture to produce an angelic, halo type effect around the head. Although the downsized image does not do it justice, you can see the rim light around the people in the photograph.

The construction seen over the far-side tower of Brooklyn Bridge is One World Trade Center, the lead building of the new World Trade Center complex. This photograph was taken in May of last year, and the building since has towered above the skyline and will eventually reach the same height as the original One World Trade Center (1,368 feet on the roof). Its radio antenna will reach a symbolic height of 1,776 feet, making it the tallest building in the United States.
