The alien in the E.T. The Extra Terrestrial film names himself E.T. after a Buck Rogers comic strip where Buck Rogers gets stranded uses an improvised device to call home.

I never understood the appeal of the homesick alien plot. The resurrection scene in E.T. was also boring. But I have to admit that the flight to the forest scene on the bicycle was cool.
