Mind Boggled...

Mind Boggled...

For Stage 5 of the 2010 International Rally New York competition, I chose the location in the photograph because of the steep drop coming out of a sharp right turn. I was anticipating the rally cars to be on on their left set of wheels; What I absolutely did not expect was what you see in the photograph - the left side of the car being airborne! After I took my eye off the viewfinder, I was mind boggled, or even stupefied for a second. I still can not exactly explain how this was possible. It made an interesting photo, but I wish that I had a video recording of it... [All other rally cars "behaved" as expected]

Something is "mind boggling" if it is intellectually or emotionally overwhelming. Quoting one of the most influential founding fathers of the United States, Thomas Paine: "Every science has for its basis a system of principles as fixed and unalterable as those by which the universe is regulated and governed. Man cannot make principles; he can only discover them". If we can not explain something, especially things that seemingly contradict our prior experiences, then we briefly become mind boggled. After this initial reaction, most of us lose our curiosity and become disinterested. If this turns into a cycle where we are less and less curious about more and more things, then we risk falling into a dangerous state of apathy.

Keep your minds boggled and, stay thirsty my fish friends!
