These days, everyone is obsessed with "looking forward"; Instead of endlessly whining about systemic decay, we believe that all we have to do is get ahead personally. But can we?

The belief that we are more or less independent of our social environment, our political system and our peers is a form of magical thinking. If our social environment is in decline, there is so much we can do to get ahead. When financial monopolies dictate the terms and they own the political system, chances are personal effort will go so much.

It's impossible to defend "endless whining". On the other hand, ignorance of what's going on because of personal focus to get ahead is also indefensible, and frankly, not very smart...
