Claudius Galenus, better know as
Galen of Pergamon was arguably the most accomplished of all medical doctors of antiquity. Born to a wealth family, he began his studies at the prestigious
Asclepeion at Pergamon. Following the teachings of
Hippocrates, he traveled the ancient world extensively and studied in numerous places until he settled in Rome and became the physician of the Roman Emperor. Galen made substantial contributions to medicine, anatomy, physiology, pathology, pharmacology, and neurology, as well as philosophy and logic.
