Saint Polycarp Church, Izmir

Saint Polycarp Church, Izmir

Saint Polycarp was a 2nd century bishop of Smyrna, present day Izmir, who was burned at the stake for refusing to burn incense to the Roman Emperor. Tradition has it that the fire at the stake would not touch his body, so instead he was stabbed to death.

The Saint Polycarp, built in 1625 with the permission of Sultan Suleiman of the Ottoman Empire and by the wish of King of France Louis 13th, is the oldest Church in Izmir. The Church continues to be used by the Catholic community as a place of worship and pilgrimage.
