The Great Fire of Smyrna which started in September 13 1922, destroyed most of the Izmir port city. In 9 days, a large section of the town was burned to the ground and tens of thousands of people perished. Some Ottomon-era houses in the pictured section of Alsancak survived the fire and many are being restored or waiting to be restored.
