Socially speaking,
normality is defined as behavior that
conforms to the most common behavior in society. What is
normal changes depending on person, time, place, society and situation. Last night, I spent about an hour on my friend's Facebook account, sifting through the profiles of common friends and old friends. It was, well, "interesting".
I've been online since the "early" 1990's, but I do not have a Facebook, Twitter, Google+, Flickr or any other
social media
account, therefore I am somewhat
abnormal. In fact, a few people already told me that I was "weird" for not having a Facebook account. Here's the thing, the online profiles of people whom I've known for a long time are rarely representative of who I think they are in person. When people do not conform to what is considered "normal", they are labeled as weird, sick, abnormal or unusual. In a quote attributed to him,
Jiddu Krishnamurti said it best:
"It's no measure of health to be well adjusted to a profoundly sick society". We ought to be looking at
conformity and
normalcy as potential
imperceptible disease.
Years ago, I saw a screening of
Dead Poets Society - great movie by the way. As I left the the theater, most moviegoers, still under the
spell of the movie, were apparently trying to shake off their "normalcy". Need I say more.
