Preserving Tradition

Preserving Tradition

New York City is one of the most culturally diverse and cosmopolitan metropolises in the world. It is a melting pot, a cultural mosaic. In the 5th century B.C., the Greek philosopher Heraclitus of Ephesus observed that "nothing is permanent except change", yet we have a innate tendency to root ourselves in tradition and cultural identity. Tradition and cultural identity are impermanent, nevertheless, as they can unite us, they can divide us. I have been critical of globalization of culture, on the other hand, any culture and identity grounded in exclusivity is a threat humanity itself. I had read somewhere that "tradition for the sake of tradition is worthless; tradition must have a purpose". I would add that tradition and identity must be inclusive...

Update: Yes, that is the Empire State Building in the distance.
