New York City is one of the most culturally diverse and
cosmopolitan metropolises in the world. It is a melting pot, a
cultural mosaic. In the 5th century B.C., the Greek philosopher
Heraclitus of Ephesus observed that
"nothing is permanent except change", yet we have a innate tendency to root ourselves in tradition and cultural identity. Tradition and cultural identity are impermanent, nevertheless, as they can unite us, they can divide us. I have been critical of
globalization of culture, on the other hand, any culture and identity grounded in
exclusivity is a threat humanity itself. I had read somewhere that
"tradition for the sake of tradition is worthless; tradition must have a purpose". I would add that tradition and identity must be
inclusive...
