The
1957 Chevrolet Bel Air is among the most recognizable
American cars of all time. It can be distinguished from the
1958 Bel Air by its single headlights. Over 700 thousand 1957's were built.
The
golden age of the U.S. auto industry
came to an end in the 1970's. Competition by Japanese and European manufacturers, rising oil prices, demand for smaller and more reliable cars, and, stricter regulations made it more difficult for American manufacturers to compete. Although there were periods of success, the industry was not able to maintain its lead.
