Cityscapes are the urban equivalent of landscapes. They have been the subject of visual arts; paintings, drawings and photographs for centuries.
The greatest challenge in photographing cityscapes, specifically
skylines is finding perspectives that are clear of power lines and other distractions. Consequently most skyline photographs look similar to each other because there are a finite number of places to photograph them.
Alternatively, as in this photograph, we can point the camera up. Although this usually produces distorted or boring photographs, this particular one of the Philadelphia skyline worked because of the
boxy feeling. Personally, I do not feel that the Philadelphia skyline represents the essence of Philadelphia, as, for example, the New York skyline represents New York City.
