In the 1970's, some rock bands that had limited success globally or in their home countries were
big in Japan - hence the expression. Some bands like Cheap Trick, Queen and Bon Jovi started out "big in Japan" but later became global successes; Others stayed "big, only in Japan". And, the opposite also happened. Some globally successful groups never made in Japan:
Small in Japan.
The term has since become a way to signify the effect of cultural differences in success. Sadly, with the exception of small cultural differences, we're moving towards a
"global mono-culture".
