This is a large scale replica/statue of a
Hittite Sun Disk located at Sihhiye Meydan in
Ankara. The original, housed in the
Museum of Anatolian Civilizations dates back to 2500-2250 BC. Until recently, this was the
city symbol of Ankara, but under the current mayor, the
city emblem was changed to a mosque based logo. Sun Disks, mostly discovered in tombs, are believed to have had a religious-ritual significance. And for the hardcore orthodox, irrespective of their religion, ancient Pagan religious symbols are simply intolerable:
