Last Wednesday, a
tractor-trailer accident on the Brooklyn Queens Expressway during rush hour turned Downtown Brooklyn traffic into a nightmare for three hours. It took nearly two hours to reach my destination - normally a twenty minute drive. I wasn't the only annoyed one. Woof!
In Greek mythology,
Charon is the name of the ferryman of
Hades who carries the souls of the newly deceased across the rivers
Styx and
Acheron to the
underworld. It was believed that those who could not pay
Charon's fee would not make it to the
afterworld. Two hours in Brooklyn traffic is like a ride on
Charon's ferry with
short change.
Charon is also the name of planet
Pluto's largest moon. Discovered in 1978, it was named by its discoverer James Christy, as a
scientific-sounding version of his wife's name,
Charlene. Well, I'm sure some guys might think that their wives are slowly sailing their souls to the
other side...
