A van, is a word derived from caravan which is adapted from the Persian karwan which means a group of people traveling together (usually on a trade expedition). Another common derived word, caravanserai is an inn (palace) where karwans could rest and recover after the day's journey. Caravanserai were historically most commonly established along the Silk Road.
