I did not know that there were no
mustangs in the Americas until the Spanish brought them. Of course I'm not talking about the car
Ford Mustang. But that's not exactly true either. Horses existed in the Americas until 8,000-10,000 years ago and they became extinct at the end of the last ice age, most likely due to climate change.
Native Americans were banned from riding horses until well into the 1600's. By the mid 1700's most Native Americans
had horses.
John Wayne movies are no place to learn about Native Americans. Here he is in his own words:
"I believe in white supremacy, until the blacks are educated to a point of responsibility. I don't believe giving authority and positions of leadership and judgment to irresponsible people ... I don't feel we did wrong in taking this great country away from [the Native Americans] ... Our so-called stealing of this country from them was just a matter of survival. There were great numbers of people who needed new land, and the Indians were selfishly trying to keep it for themselves." I guess
if you are racist enough, they "honor" you with the highest civilian awards; John Wayne was given both the
Congressional Gold Medal and the
Presidential Medal of Freedom.
