Once they land in Samos, Syrian refugees walk the island's narrow roads to the port of Vathy or the port of Karlovasi. On the road to freedom? Nobody knows.

On the evening of the day I took this photo, while having dinner in Vathy, the coastguard brought in about half a dozen arrested Syrians to a nearby building. Seeing this, the restaurant owner scrambled to take a dining family of refugees inside. Kudos to him!
