The
Caretta Caretta (Loggerhead Sea Turtle) has a broad range spanning the Atlantic, Pacific, and Indian Oceans, as well as the Mediterranean Sea. It has become an
endangered species due to hunting and loss of habitat. The greatest threat to the species, which has a normal lifespan of 47-67 years, is fishing gear, especially longlines and gillnets.
Iztuzu Beach is one of the prime breeding grounds in the Mediterranean for the
Caretta Caretta. In the 1980's. environmentalists
June Haimoff launched a successful campaign to preserve the beach habitat for the turtles.
