The original
Mad magazine comic strip
"Spy vs. Spy" debuted in 1961, with two characters, the Black Spy and the White Spy. In 1973 the strip was renamed
"Spy vs. Spy vs. Spy" and a third character was added, the Grey Spy.
"We are the 99%" slogan of the
Occupy Movement is indeed reflective of the concentration of income and wealth among the top earning 1% at the expense of the 99%. The problem with the slogan is the
"We" part; There is no
solidarity within the 99%; It is more like "Spy vs. Spy vs. Spy".
Abolitionist, humanitarian, Union spy, and women's suffrage activist
Harriet Tubman (1820-1913) was instrumental in the rescue hundreds of slaves through the
Underground Railroad. She is
quoted as saying:
"I freed thousands of slaves. I could have freed thousands more, if they had known they were slaves". That's still the case today. Possibly 90+% of the 99% are either ignorant, or in denial of the fact that they are personally, psychologically, economically and environmentally being exploited by the 1%.
Do something. If you can't do something, then say something. If you can't say something, then at least disapprove of wrongdoing in your thoughts. And, do not get in the way of those who are struggling. Ignorance has consequences!
